Abandoned Fishing Vessel “Arrested” in Gloucester for Debt
September 19, 2015
The Gloucester Times reports that a 46-year-old wooden fishing vessel that was abandoned by its owners at Gloucester Marine Railways has been arrested for outstanding debt.
The 41’ Irish Piper was brought to the Gloucester Marine Railways (GMR) for repair and wharfage, but the owners never returned to claim their boat or pay for the services. GMR filed a lawsuit against the owners, but also named the boat as a co-defendant, and requested that U.S. marshals arrest the vessel. According to an attorney who represents GMR, boats can be sued and arrested under admiralty law.
