Amistad in New Haven for Anniversary
July 4, 2014
NHRegister.com: Freedom Schooner Amistad crew and board members gathered on the ship’s deck Wednesday morning before a modest group of supporters to kick off the 175th anniversary of the Amistad incident.
The schooner is back in its home port for the first time in about six months, and Wednesday’s kick-off sets the ship on a summer-long tour of Connecticut and the rest of New England. To commemorate the event and remember the waves the incident made in New Haven history, Amistad America Executive Director Hanifa Washington and others took the helm and spoke about why the event is important to the city and race relations today.
