Aquaculture Industry Expanding in Rhode Island

Study Reveals Benefits of Shellfish Farming
An oyster farm. Photo/NOAA Aquaculture Program. According to the [Rhode Island] Coastal Resources Management Council, the state’s oyster industry was challenged by the winter of 2015, but is poised for a “growth opportunity” in 2016.

In the annual status report, Aquaculture Coordinator David Beutel said the number of oyster farms in Rhode Island increased last year from 55 to 61, and the number of people working in the industry grew from 142 to 171.
