WickedLocal Provincetown: Wooden boatbuilding is a part of the fabric of the Outer Cape. Master builders, with decades of experience, are tucked away in the woods of Wellfleet, alongside a pond in Orleans, hunkered down in a shop in Eastham and working in an old structure on a quiet street in Provincetown.

Wood, a predominant boat material until the development of polyester resin in 1935, has seen a resurgence of interest since the 1970s, creating a demand for custom building.

“New construction techniques and the improved quality of marine plywood have contributed to this return to wooden boats,” says Walter Baron, the owner of Old Wharf Dory Company in Wellfleet.
