EastBayRI.com: Last of the Mohicans, the Last Samurai, and now Tiverton’s own—Richard ‘Richie’ Cottreau—last of the master boat builders.
Born 79 years ago, on the water’s edge in Wedgeport, Nova Scotia, he’s been married to Ida Cottreau for 58 years. They have 2 daughters—Jamie and Louise—and 5 grandchildren.
Richie actually started out as a fisherman, working with his father in Nova Scotia, but that never-ending green-gilled malady called sea-sickness slowly put an end to that career. He turned to the next obvious profession in Nova Scotia—boat building.
For the past 60 or so years Richie has been building boats, and very fine boats at that. He lost count at around 800 or so.
