The Vineyard Gazette posted an article on the passing of Herbert Slater, a former harpoon swordfisherman from Menemsha Harbor, a major source of swordfish landings on the East Coast in the 1950’s, ‘60’s and ‘70s.

The article recounts the days of small-boat swordfishing, when the harpoon boats tied up two, three and four deep along Dutcher Dock. It was an exciting time, with colorful characters.
