Article Sheds Light on Rose Island, RI

A recent article in the Cranston Herald focuses on Rose Island in Narragansett Bay’s lower East Passage. The article describes the island’s history starting in the late 1700’s, when Fort Hamilton was built on the 18-acre island. Later, the fort barracks were used as a quarantine hospital for patients during the Newport cholera epidemic.

In 1869, the southwest bastion of Fort Hamilton was filled in to accommodate a lighthouse. The lighthouse keepers maintained gardens and farm animals on the little island.
