Barge Capsizes off Block Island, Dumps Backhoe
June 9, 2015
Providence Journal: A barge capsized off of Old Harbor [Block Island] Saturday afternoon [June 6], dumping a backhoe that had been working on the breakwater there into the water.
No one was injured when the vessel overturned around 2:00 p.m., according to a Coast Guard spokeswoman, and the barge has since been righted. The backhoe, which had been on the barge, remained in the water Sunday afternoon and has been surrounded by boom barriers to prevent any contaminants inside it from spreading, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Myeonghi Clegg. Divers have attached cables to the submerged backhoe and crews are expected to pull it out of the water with the help of a crane Monday.
