Barnstable Harbor Repairs Nearly Complete

CapeCodOnline: After more than a year of construction to replace a decades-old bulkhead, Barnstable Harbor will be open for business May 1.

“It’s pretty much done at this point,” said Mark Ells, Barnstable’s director of public works.

The 40-year-old bulkhead needed to be repaired after a portion of its south side collapsed in 2008, forcing the town to close off 8 boat slips, about 20 parking spaces and the facilities fishermen use to unload their catches. The bulkhead continued to give way until construction began.

The Barnstable Harbor Marina has 88 slips, 22 of which remained in use during the construction, Shufelt said. The construction did not change the capacity of the marina, but reinforced and renewed what was there, officials said.
