Block Island Shark Study Expanding
December 17, 2020

The Atlantic Shark Institute, based in Wakefield, Rhode Island, is expanding its study of great white sharks in the waters around Block Island.

Eight acoustic receivers (one more than were used in 2020) that can detect the proximity of transmitter-tagged sharks will be installed in strategic spots around the island in from June to November 2021. Additionally, underwater video cameras mounted on Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems will hopefully capture the ID and behavior of any sharks that can be lured close enough with bait.
