Block Island Shellfish Farm Faces Opposition

Block Island Times: Chris Warfel’s application for his business, Sun Farm Oysters, to win an aquaculture lease in a section of the Great Salt Pond set aside for public recreation drew heated opposition from town Harbormaster Stephen Land at the Planning Board and Conservation Commission meetings this week.
Land, in both meetings, compared the proposal to Champlin Marina’s controversial dock expansion plan that the town spent much of the last decade fighting. Both projects, said Land, sought to take up public space in the pond for a private, for-profit company.
