Block Island Wind Farm Safety Zone Established

 EP-305279956.jpg&MaxW=960The Coast Guard has established a 500-yard safety zone around each of 5 locations where the Block Island Wind Farm (BIWF) wind turbine generator (WTG) foundations will be constructed in the navigable waters of the Rhode Island Sound, RI.

According to the Coast Guard, these safety zones are intended to safeguard mariners from the hazards associated with construction of the WTG foundations. Vessels are prohibited from entering into, transiting through, mooring, or anchoring within these safety zones while construction vessels and associated equipment are present, unless authorized by the Captain of the Port (COTP), Southeastern New England or the COTP’s designated representative.


This rule is effective from July 16, 2015, until September 30, 2015.

  • Platform WTF 2         41° 7.1962 N/71° 30.8372 W
  • Platform WTF 3         41° 6.8862 N/71° 31.2682 W
  • Platform WTF 4         41° 6.6122 N/71° 31.7472 W
  • Platform WTF 5         41° 6.3832 N/71° 32.2592 W
