Boat Sinks in Salem, MA
May 3, 2011
The Salem News: An experienced captain exiting Salem Harbor, Massachusetts, under optimal conditions found himself swimming for his life when his 38-foot cabin cruiser sank in 2 minutes for no apparent reason.
The quick action of Sam Zocco of Quality Marine, who happened to be at work nearby tending to moorings, likely saved Perry Luke, 67, of Wakefield, the only person aboard the 3 Jays when it went down.
“In another five or 10 minutes, I would have gone into hypothermia,” said Luke, who at the time was losing a battle to get on top of a capsized rubber raft. “If it wasn’t for Sam, I wouldn’t be here. … Thank you, Sam, for saving my life.”
