Boater’s Body Recovered off New Haven, CT

Coast Guard and partner agency crews ended their search for a missing boater on Sunday evening (Aug. 27) after a body matching the man’s description was located in the vicinity of New Haven, CT. The man was identified as 53-year-old Michael Murphy. The search began when watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a report from a good Samaritan stating they had located an overturned and damaged vessel near the west breakwall in New Haven at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Sunday. An unresponsive individual was also located on the rocks of the breakwall, later to be determined as a passenger of the capsized vessel. The command center issued an urgent marine information broadcast (UMIB) and launched a boat crew from Coast Guard Station New Haven. West Haven Fire Department-Marine unit also responded to the scene. During the nearly 10-hour search effort, Coast Guard crews and local agencies covered approximately 61-square nautical miles. The incident is under investigation.
