Boating & Biking in Buzzards Bay

What do bikes and boats have in common? For one thing, they can both be used as transportation to new adventures, and many boaters combine the two by carrying folding bikes aboard to explore ashore and get some exercise.

While New England is blessed with many bike-friendly ports, boaters visiting Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, will find a network of dedicated bike paths and quiet roads at their disposal. Indeed, it’s possible to pedal completely around the bay if you wish—and many folks do just that during the annual Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride fundraiser for the Buzzards Bay Coalition. This year the event will be held on Sunday, October 5, and will raise money to protect the waters of the bay.

To highlight some of the great biking possibilities around the bay, we put together the accompanying short video in conjunction with the Buzzards Bay Coalition. It shows some of the area’s many great bike paths, including the Phoenix Rail Trail in Fairhaven, the Cape Cod Canal bike path in Bourne and the Shining Seas bike path in Falmouth. Boaters can pick up these trails and others at virtually any harbor in Buzzards Bay. And more bike paths are currently in the works in places like Marion and Mattapoisett.
