Body of Missing Sailor Found off Long Island

The Coast Guard has recovered the body of Ciro Stellges, 52, who went missing while bringing a 26’ sailboat from Mattituck to Port Washington, New York, on Sunday afternoon.

Stellges’ body was found east of Mattituck Inlet at 8:10 on Monday morning, May 5. The sailor had called police via 911 just after 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, saying his boat was taking on water 3 miles off shore.

Sea conditions on Sunday were 3’ to 4’ with northwest winds gusting to 35 knots. A small-craft advisory had been issued.

Two 45’ boats and a helicopter were used to search for Stellges.
