June 1, 2011
Coast Guard crews have concluded their search for a 12-year-old Lawrence, Massachusetts girl. A body matching the description of the missing girl was found by beachgoers near Hampton Beach, New Hampshire.
Coast Guard crews from Air Station Cape Cod, Station Portsmouth Harbor and Station Merrimack River began searching for the young girl after receiving a report from the Hampton Fire Department that she and her brother were swept out to sea by a rip current, May 30, 2011.
Beachgoers rescued the girl’s 20-year-old brother from the water, but were unable to reach her.
Coast Guard crews and partner agencies saturated more than 40 square miles with multiple units for more than 16 hours. The girl was found in the surf near where she went missing.
Hampton fire and police departments, lifeguards and the New Hampshire Marine Patrol assisted in the search.
“This is a tragic loss,” said Capt. James McPherson. “While we had rescue boats and searchers in the area for over 16 hours with favorable search conditions, we are saddened we were unable to make a rescue in this case. Our thoughts are with the family during this very difficult time.”
