Boothbay Harbor Report: 8.5.12
August 6, 2012
Capt. Barry Gibson of Shark Six Charters in Boothbay Harbor reports that the fishing improved this past week.
“The chatter boats getting in some decent trips on stripers, with a fair number of fish over 40”,” he said. “The Kennebec River is still slow, but action along the western beaches has picked up.” Barry also reported that the bluefish have arrived and are running 8 to 12 pounds. “Several of the boats have been casting poppers to schools cruising on top, with good success,” he told me.
“Groundfish action has been good on the offshore ledges. Barry took a trip to Plattes Bank with four friends on August 4th, and they loaded up with cod, haddock, pollock, and cusk in less than three hours of fishing.
“Tuna fishing is picking up as well. John Shostak on the Lion’s Den out of Boothbay caught four, ranging from 50” to 70”, the night of August 3rd, and hooked a big thresher shark as well. Mackerel of all sizes are still plentiful in the bays and in the harbor.”
