Canyons & Seamounts Marine Monument Upheld

A federal appeals court has upheld the Obama administration’s 2016 designation of a federally protected conservation area south of Georges Bank, despite opposition by commercial fishermen.

The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument is a 5,000-square-mile area that contains fragile deep-sea corals and vulnerable species of marine life, according to marine biologists. Recreational fishermen are allowed to fish the canyons within the monument boundaries.
