Cape Cod Lightship Operators Remember the Past

CapeCodOnline: Bob Gubitosi learned how to sleep on the U.S. Coast Guard lightship in the waters off Nantucket by gripping the bars of his bunk when a big storm hit.

As a cook aboard a lightship from 1957 to 1961, he made food in deep pots so it wouldn’t slop out during storms. He faced down countless northeasters 70 miles from Nantucket, as the ship served as a beacon for traveling mariners.

On Thursday night, he swapped stories with fellow Coast Guard lightship sailors at the Radisson in Hyannis.
