Cape Drawbridge May Receive “Historic” Listing
October 25, 2010
CapeCodOnline: The Mitchell River Bridge in Chatham is eligible for a national historic designation, according to a ruling released Thursday.
The last remaining single-leaf wooden drawbridge in Massachusetts, and perhaps in the country, is of exceptional significance, interim Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places Carol Shull wrote in the Oct. 1 decision.
The decision has national significance for deciding the eligibility of an often-repaired structure that may have few, if any, original elements left.
