Celestial Navigation Course Offered in NH


The Boatshop at Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, NH, will host a course on celestial navigation, May 5 & 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days.

Deadline to register is April 20.

This is a concise 2-day course in the theory and practice of practical celestial navigation.

Participants will learn basic principles, timekeeping, almanac usage, sight reduction methods and position plotting, and training and observation with a marine sextant. Alternative reduction by scientific hand calculator will be discussed, and a PC-based programmed calculator emulator offered.

At the conclusion, participants will be able to take sights, reduce them and plot positions from daily observations of the sun. Morning twilight observations of the moon and planets may be offered, all dependent on weather conditions.

No special math skills are required—only addition and subtraction, and table look-ups. All materials will be provided. Learn more or register
