Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Phippsburg Man
April 8, 2011
The Coast Guard has suspended its search as of 12:10 p.m. today for the Phippsburg man who went missing on the Kennebec River near Georgetown Island, Maine.
Richard Lemont has been missing since noon April 7, when he was last seen leaving Phippsburg in an aluminum skiff.
Coast Guard crews searched approximately 12 square miles for 23 hours for Lemont. Maine Marine Patrol, Maine State Police, other local emergency response crews and good Samaritans have also participated in the search.
“Suspending a search is always an extremely difficult decision,” said Capt. James McPherson, commander of Sector Northern New England. “Throughout this case, the Coast Guard received fantastic support from various agencies, and through this partnership, was able to quickly and thoroughly focus a significant amount of resources in the search area. Our thoughts continue to be with Mr. Lemont’s friends and family during this very difficult time.”
