Court Reinstates Buzzards Bay Oil Barge Law

CapeCodOnline: A federal appeals court ruling last week reinstates a Massachusetts state law that will ensure oil barges traveling through Buzzards Bay are properly manned and escorted, according to Attorney General Martha Coakley.

The decision against the U.S. Coast Guard is an important step towards preventing future oil spills in Buzzards Bay, said Coakley in a prepared statement.

The Massachusetts Legislature enacted the Massachusetts Oil Spill Prevention Act in the wake of the April 2003 spill when approximately 98,000 gallons of oil leaked into Buzzards Bay from an oil barge. But then the Coast Guard enacted federal regulations that invalidated key provisions the of the state law Coakley stated.
