CT Salmon, Trout Hatchery Faces Closure
March 16, 2015
The Farmington Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited has alerted its members to the proposed closure of the Kensington Hatchery, only hatchery in the state where salmon and seeforellen brown trout are raised in Connecticut, due to budget cuts. Closure of this hatchery would mean a halt or dramatic decrease in the stocking of salmon and possible extinction of a unique strain of trout, according to the group. It would also place 2 educational programs, “Salmon in the Schools” and “Trout in the Classroom”, in jeopardy. Both programs are designed to make science, math and writing concepts tangible for students.
Trout Unlimited is urging its members to lobby the Conservation and Development Appropriations Subcommittee to reinstate funding for the hatchery.
