CT Urges Spring Cold-Water Safety
March 27, 2012
With air temperatures rising earlier than normal, the Connecticut Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) is reminding the public to act safely this spring if tempted to venture in or on the state’s lakes, ponds and ocean beaches.
DCR is urging the public to avoid diving, jumping or any quick immersion. Jumping into cold water can cause an involuntary airway spasm that inhibits breathing, even the person they can get above the surface.
DCR is also reminding the public that there are no lifeguards on duty at DCR facilities during the spring. Check DCR’s website in late May for the full lifeguard and beachfront schedule.
