NEWPORT CAN BE SOMEWHAT INTIMIDATING PLACE TO VISIT FOR THE AVERAGE BOATER, GIVEN THE MULTITUDE OF MEGAYACHTS, SCHOONERS, AND OTHER LARGE VESSELS THAT CALL ON THIS FAMOUS PORT THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER. HOWEVER, THE NEWPORT MARITIME CENTER, JUST OFF THAMES STREET AT THE ANN STREET, OFFERS THE IDEAL SOLUTION FOR BOATERS LOOKING TO TIE UP FOR A FEW HOURS WHILE THEY GRAB A MEAL OR DO SOME SHOPPING IN TOWN. IT’S ALSO A CONVENIENT SPOT TO PICK UP AND DROP OFF PASSENGERS.

The Center’s dock (open 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.) is staffed by helpful attendants and can accommodate vessels up to 40’ for a fee of 50 cents/foot per hour. It also has plenty of free dinghy space and pump-out service. There is no tie-up limit, although all boats must be removed by 10:00 p.m. Tip: on summer weekends the docks can fill up fast, especially around mid-day, so get there early or try to plan your visit during a week day.

Inside the Maritime Center you’ll find free WiFi, washer/dryers, showers, vending machines, ice, a TV, lockers and a reading library. It’s a wonderful resource for transient boaters who are staying on a mooring or on the hook.

Perhaps best of all, the Center is located right off Thames Street, providing quick access to many downtown shops and restaurants.

The Maritime Center also maintains public docks with hourly tie-up at Perotti Park, in the northeast corner of the harbor. It’s a little farther from the Thames Street area, but still not a long walk.
