Downed Weather Balloon Sparks Search in Mass Bay
October 10, 2011
Salem News: A report that a parasailor may have gone into the waters off Devereux Beach brought the attention of the police, the Fire Department, the harbormaster, the Coast Guard, Beverly Airport and the National Weather Service last Wednesday morning.
In the end, officials decided that what witnesses had seen was probably a weather balloon falling into Massachusetts Bay. The Marblehead Fire Department sent their inflatable boat, the Zodiac, roughly 1,000 feet out to make a circular search of the area.
