Long Islanders Reflect on Dying Lobster Industry

As Long Island Sound closes to lobster harvesting until November 28, the region’s lobstermen are remembering better days for the industry and the developments that lead to this closure, according to an article in the Suffolk Times.
Lobstermen remember great fall seasons in Long Island Sound years ago. But a combination of rising water temperatures, low dissolved oxygen, pesticide runoff and nitrogen loading led to a massive die-off in the late-1990s. And the harvest has withered ever since.
