Earliest Ice-Out Recorded on Lake Winnipesaukee

Boston.com reports that 2012 marks the earliest recorded ice-out on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee. The ice-out determination was made Friday, March 23.

According to the article, ice-out is declared when the M.S. Mount Washington excursion boat ship can leave its Meredith winter dock and travel the lake unimpeded by ice floes.

Before this year, the earliest recorded ice-out was in 2010, when it was called on March 24. Before that, the earliest ice-out recorded was March 29, 1921, and the latest ice-out was May 12, 1887.
