Event of the Week: Belfast Harbor Fest 2014

The 2014 Belfast, Maine, Harbor Fest takes place this weekend, Friday, August 15 through Sunday, August 17.

The 3-day event includes all sorts of fun activities on the Belfast waterfront.


  • 5K Road Race & Pancake Breakfast on Friday
  • Cardboard Boat Challenge:
    Saturday, Aug. 16
    Sunday, Aug. 17 at Steamboat Park
    Challenge family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, competitors, and other businesses or organizations to design and enter a cardboard boat in the Belfast Harbor Fest Cardboard Boat Challenge.
  • Boatbuilders Showcase
    Whether you’re an amateur or professional boatbuilder, bring your boat and display it for Belfast Harbor Fest visitors to see. Kayak, canoe, skiff, sailboat, launches–all kinds of classic small boats are welcome to display on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Kids Fun
    The Harbor Fest Kids area includes such activities as making rope, a rope bridge for kids to climb, decorating and racing a sailboat in the gutter race, face painting, a bounce house, crafts and more.
  • The National Boatbuilding Challenge
    Held on Saturday and sponsored by the Belfast Rotary Club. Boat building begins at 9:30 a.m. and the relay race begins at 3:00 p.m
    Teams comprise professional boatbuilders, amateur boatbuilders, and mostly novice boatbuilders. The challenge involves 2-person teams building a 12’ wooden skiff in under 4 hours, followed by a rowing relay race. Teams are judged on how quickly they complete construction, the quality of the craftsmanship and their speed on the water in the 2-man race.
  • Cheer on the Belfast Come Boating! teams as they compete with regional teams in the Belfast Harbor at Steamboat Landing on Saturday.

The even also features plenty of great food and live music.
