Exhibit Showcases Staten Island Sailors
September 30, 2014
An exhibit currently at the Noble Maritime Collection on New York’s Staten Island examines the life of sailors living on Staten Island more than a century ago, according to an article on NYTimes.com.
For more than a century, before pensions and Social Security, sailors retired on Staten Island, in Snug Harbor. The Snugs, as they were known, lived a life that many New Yorkers now aspire to: They farmed, raced boats and made handcrafted goods in a multicultural environment.
The exhibit is on display through May 2015.
