The Jamestown Press reports that state environmental workers and the Army Corps of Engineers are operating an excavator on Dutch Island, off the western shore of Conanicut Island in Lower Narragansett Bay, to remove military hazards. The island has been off-limits to the public since 2000, due to the dangers from underground bunkers, unexploded devices and open cisterns. The Army Corps announced the project more than a year ago, but apparently Jamestown officials were never notified that the work had started.
