Feds Continue to Pay for At-Sea Fishing Monitors

The National Marine Fisheries Service has announced that it will extend funding of At-Sea Monitors aboard fishing vessels into 2016. The monitors are paid to observe and record the fishing practices and catch of offshore fishing vessels to gather important data on fisheries.

Prior to the announcement, there was concern by the fishing industry that it might have to fund the cost of observers. However, recent negotiations between the fishing industry and companies providing fishery observers produced a lower-than-expected price, which made it possible for the federal government to cover the cost.
