First Osprey Sighted on Shelter Island
March 22, 2013
The first osprey sighting of the season on New York’s Shelter Island occurred Saturday morning at the Mashomack Preserve, according to an article in the Shelter Island Reporter.
Preserve director Mike Laspia said he and his crew had just put the finishing touches on a pole holding an osprey nest Friday that had been damaged by Superstorm Sandy.
“I hope they can find some fish here to feed on,” Laspia said about the return that usually coincides with the beginning of spring, but this year was also greeted with another cold snap.
