Newburyport News: State police identified a fisherman who slipped away from emergency responders and disappeared into the Merrimack River after his boat capsized Tuesday evening [June 6] as Chhoeun Chhoun of Lowell.

Chhoun and Sok Pen, 43, also of Lowell, were spotted clinging to their overturned 20’ boat Tuesday in high winds and 12’ waves.

Pen managed to reach a nearby jetty and was pulled to safety by 2 Salisbury police officers. But while Coast Guard personnel aboard their 47’ vessel were able to throw a buoy to Chhoun, he was unable to hang on to it. He disappeared in the waves, prompting a lengthy search overnight that was suspended Wednesday morning.
