Fishermen Charged with Spearing Striped Bass
October 18, 2013
Four fishermen are accused of spearing more than 70 fish in Block Island Sound in August, 2013, according to an article from the North Fork Patch.
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens announced on Tuesday (October 15) that the fishermen have been charged with 4 felonies related to the illegal spearing of striped bass. New York Environmental Conservation Law prohibits the taking of striped bass for commercial purposes via spear due to the fact there is a slot size limit that is hard to determine until the fish are actually in hand.
