Fishermen, Scientists to Study Spawning Cod
January 17, 2014
The Patriot Ledger reports that local fishermen on the South Shore of Massachusetts have joined state officials and representatives from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Massachusetts Nature Conservancy and the UMass-Dartmouth School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) in a $150,000 research project focused on the spawning behavior of cod.
The researchers and fishermen are working together to catch about 150 spawning cod, implant electronic tags in their bellies and release them. About 35 receivers have been placed on the ocean floor to record the coded sound emitted by the tags whenever a cod is nearby.
