Fishing Spotlight: South Cape Cod Bluefish
May 27, 2016
The bluefish are on the flats off Popponesset and Cotuit, MA, and Tom Richardson of New England Fishing and Dave Steeves of Goose Hummock Shops were there to sample the action in a pair of kayaks back in 2016.
The weather was ideal for sighting the wolfpacks of five- to seven-pound blues that were cruising just below the surface, and often showing wakes and tails. As is typical of early-season blues, the fish were spooky at times and often followed the plugs without striking. However, eventually a cast would be rewarded with savage strikes.
Productive topwater lures for this fishery include the Zara Spook, Gibbs Pencil Popper, Rebel Jumpin’ Minnow and small Cordell Pencil Popper. It’s exciting, sight-fishing action, but it won’t last long.
