Gap in Merrimack River Jetty to be Closed
November 26, 2014
Newburyport News: Federal funds have been earmarked to block a gap near the north jetty [of the Merrimack River] that threatened to undermine a multi-million-dollar restoration project of the jetties.
State Sen. Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, said Friday [Nov. 21] that federal officials have earmarked another “$400,000 to $500,000” to plug an aperture near the stone jetty of about 100’.
“This is an important part of the project,” said Tarr Friday. “If a gap near the north jetty were permitted to exist, it could mean the migration of sand from Salisbury beach into the waterway.
