Giant Floating Art Gallery Arrives In Newport
June 28, 2011
SeaFair, a giant mega-yacht and floating art gallery, arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, yesterday, where its exhibits will be on display for at least two weeks.
The $40 million yacht is the world’s first mobile mega-yacht venue and the fourth-largest privately owned yacht in the United States. At 228 feet and 2,800 tons, it is the largest ship built for commercial operation in the Intracoastal Waterway, but requires a draft of only 6.5 feet, allowing it to dock at small yacht facilities in central city locations rather than use commercial ports.
While in Newport, the SeaFair will display its 28 galleries of international fine art, jewelry and collectibles from June 30 to July 13. The boat also features a coffee bar, champagne and caviar lounge, and restaurant.
The ship’s operators had planned to exhibit in Newport all summer, but, according to Cruising Compass, they’ve met some resistance from local Newport business owners who are concerned that the boat will take business away from them. As a result, the Newport City Council has only issued them a permit to operate for two weeks, with the option to apply for an extension through September 5.
