Greenport, NY, Commercial Fishermen Asked to Vacate Harbor

The Suffolk Times reports on the shrinking offshore commercial fishing fleet in Greenport Village, where as many as 50 large vessels once tied up in the harbor. Today, most of the captains and owners whose boats once fed Greenport’s fishing industry have either moved elsewhere or sold their boats.

Most recently, third-generation fisherman Sidney “Sid” Smith III sold his 63’ Merit, leaving just one offshore commercial fisherman operating out of Greenport Village.
