Groups Rally for Plum Island Preservation at Hearing
October 19, 2012
New Haven Register: More than 100 people turned out Wednesday night [October 17] for a public hearing on the U.S. government’s Congressionally-mandated bid to sell the environmentally-sensitive, 840-acre Plum Island in Long Island Sound when animal disease research shifts to a proposed new facility in Kansas.
The government is required to sell the property, located 1 1/2 miles east of Long Island’s Orient Point, by a 2009 Congressional bill that mandated its sale if the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s research facility closes.
