Harbormasters Stop Unmanned Boat off Fall River, MA

On Sunday, August 13, a quick-thinking harbormaster and his assistant were able to stop an unmanned 21’ powerboat that was circling at full throttle on the lower Taunton River in Massachusetts after its captain was thrown overboard. According to Fall River Harbormaster Bob Smith, the vessel’s owner was heading back to Tiverton when he hit a wake and was thrown from the craft. His kill switch was not attached, so the vessel continued under power and began making wide circles.

The harbormasters were able to stop the boat by throwing a line in the water, which eventually caught in the boat’s propeller and stalled the engine.
