Harwich, MA, Artificial Reef Project Underway

Recreational fishermen on Cape Cod will soon have a new spot to fish for sea bass, fluke, scup, tautog, stripers and bluefish thanks to construction of an artificial reef off Harwich. On Wednesday, March 23, 1,600 cubic yards of concrete from the demolished Harwich High School foundation were pushed off a barge and into Nantucket Sound, where it became part of the second artificial reef in Massachusetts. The reef will cover a 10-acre rectangle of bottom just a few miles off Saquatucket Harbor.

The $146,000 project was funded by the state’s saltwater license program, which was established in 2011 and nets around $400,000 a year for recreational fishing improvements. The new reef will be off-limits to commercial fishermen.
