Humpback Whale Spotted in Cape Cod Canal
July 19, 2019
On Thursday, July 18, members of the Wareham, MA, Department of Natural Resources captured video of a large humpback whale transiting the Cape Cod Canal off Onset. WDNR and the Army Corp. of Engineers provided a security zone for the whale as it surfaced between Onset Island and Hog Island Channel. The video is posted on the WDNR Facebook page.
The humpback eventually continued on its journey down Hog Island Channel towards Buzzards Bay and has not been spotted since, according to the WDNR Facebook post. Area boaters are asked to keep a close lookout and operate at a safe distance from the whale, and to report sightings to the Coast Guard.
