Dredging Today reports that Stewart’s Creek, which connects a salt pond in Hyannis to Nantucket Sound via a small culvert, will be dredged in December 2012 to increase tidal flow to the pond and adjoining wetlands.

According to the Army Corps of Engineers, which awarded a dredging contract to Sumco Eco-Contracting, LLC, of Salem, Massachusetts, “inadequate flushing is contributing to eutrophication and sediment accumulation in the salt pond.”

The dredging is part of a larger Stewart’s Creek Estuary Restoration Project.
