About Joe Cronin

The namesake of the tournament, Joe Cronin, was not only a player and manager for the Boston Red Sox, but was also a Commissioner of the American League. Along with his teammate Ted Williams and Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, they initiated and fostered a strong partnership with the Jimmy Fund that continues today. Cronin died in 1984 at age 77 in Osterville, and is buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville. His jersey, number 4, was retired by the Red Sox on May 29, 1984. _
