SeacoastOnline: This summer marks a special anniversary on Star Island — as it was 400 years ago that British Capt. John Smith first stepped foot on the Isles of Shoals.

Best known as the leader of the Jamestown, VA, colony established in 1607, Smith discovered during a 1614 voyage what he would later refer to as “New England.”

And that included a visit to the islands off the coast of the Seacoast area, which he originally called “Smith isles.”
