May 10, 2019
The first harvest of commercially grown kelp was gathered from an experimental kelp farm in the Great Salt Pond (New Harbor) on Block Island.
The kelp, grown on lines, is being sold to a Maine-based company that sells seaweed products and promotes ocean farming. Some 1,300 pounds of kelp was harvested, according to the Block Island Times.
